Are you ready to add some value to your home? Let us tell you why it’s time to invest in your home. According to a survey conducted by Porch.com, 76% of homeowners in the U.S. have completed at least one home improvement project since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. More are planning to complete a project in the next 12 months. If you are one of those homeowners, we’re ready to help you!

If you have no idea where to start with updating and investing in your home, take a look at some of the ideas we’ve put together for you.

More Energy Efficient

Updating your home to make it more energy efficient will not only reduce our carbon footprint but it will put money back in your wallet. Let’s start with your windows.

Feeling the heat come through and dreading the cold winter air? Make sure to check the caulking and weather stripping around your windows. Fill in any gaps.

In addition to caulking, installing our Verticool interior drop shades will help keep your home the temperature that you desire. You’ll be protected from UV rays since interior shades block up to 99% from entering your home. They also protect your furniture from sun damage and will reduce light glare. And don’t forget about giving yourself some privacy.

Now that you’ve got your windows under control, consider these other options to increase efficiency:

  • Install fans. Summer is almost over but the dog days are here. By installing fans, you’ll be able to use them in the mornings before it gets too hot and again at night rather than the air conditioner.
  • Change the filters on your HVAC unit. This should be done every three months.
  • Consider upgrading your appliances to energy-efficient ones if you don’t already have them.
  • Turn down your water thermostat. You waste energy if you have to turn on the cold-water tap while showering so you don’t burn yourself.
  • Use LED and CFL lightbulbs.

Boost Your Curb Appeal

It’s no secret that the outside of your home is the first impression. Boosting your curb appeal will definitely add value to your home. There are some really simple ways to do this.

Let’s start with the windows here too. Let SugarHouse give your house a new look with some window awnings. Not only will this help with the appeal, but it will also help with your energy efficiency! We have several different options.

Retractable window awnings come with either manual or motorized controls for convenient operation. Whichever you choose, you’ll be sure to enjoy your window awnings worry-free for years to come thanks to our 10-year limited warranty.

Rigid Frame awnings are very attractive and can add color to the exterior of your home. These awnings are constructed from welded tubular metal supports that are covered in a fabric that can be colored with the color or pattern of your choice.

Rope-Operated window awnings are a sturdy, durable shade solution for your storefront or home. Capable of cooling the interior while beautifying the exterior of your home, this classic awning design has been a SugarHouse customer favorite for over 75 years.

Our awning experts will customize and install your window awnings. You can finish updating your curb appeal with a few DIY projects including:

  • Make your front door stand out by painting it with a pop of color.
  • Keep up with your landscaping. Overgrown grass and weeds can take away from the beauty of your home.
  • Dress up your front porch by adding some decor. Change it with the seasons or keep it simple year-round.

Protect Your Investments

When investing in your home, you’ll want to make sure those investments are protected and cared for properly. Our custom canvas products will protect backyard investments like outdoor kitchens, fire pits, hot tubs, air conditioners, etc.

Our custom covers are made from a heavy-duty, commercial-grade fabric. It’s a breathable canvas that provides full-length coverage that prevents condensation. You’ll receive a 7-20 year warranty plus a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Let’s get going on your newest and best investment – your home. Give us a call at 801-563-9600.

“It’s a cruel, cruel summer…”

It’s no secret that this summer is very different from other years. Travel plans are being changed and maybe even halted. However, it doesn’t have to be a totally cruel summer. Turn your summer vacation into a staycation. Sound a little boring? It won’t be with the help of SugarHouse’s products. We’ll turn your backyard into your vacation destination. So let’s take a trip to your backyard to explore the possibilities.

Get Your Food On

One of the first things a lot of people look forward to on a vacation is different types of food and eating as much of it as possible. So, the first stop on your staycation will be for your inner foodie. With an outdoor kitchen, you’ll be able to create all sorts of food from around the world in your own backyard. To give you an idea and some recipes to transport you to another country, check out this article by Good Food. Here’s a sampling of what you’ll find:

  • Singapore-style barbecued chicken wings
  • Turkish kebabs
  • Boerewors with chakalaka and polenta

While cooking these recipes, we want to make sure your skin isn’t cooking. That’s why we recommend a beautiful retractable awning to cover your kitchen. These awnings can also offer protection from rain in case your imaginary tropical vacation turns into a tropical storm.

Our retractable awnings have so many features including wind and sun sensors, handheld remote controls, and home automation integration. The fabrics we use are exceptionally durable and highly customizable.

Wellness and Relaxation

Now that you’ve eaten to your heart’s content, it’s time to rest with a little wellness and relaxation. With everything that’s going on with COVID-19, your life might feel out of control and stressful. Transform your patio into your own outdoor retreat. Somewhere you can do a little yoga, meditation, and soak your stress away in a nice hot tub. To give you a little privacy while you take this journey, install a rope-operated drop shade.

Our Verticool rope-operated drop shades provide superior protection and shade for your enclosed deck or patio. These shades simply drop when the rope is released and raise by pulling on the rope. Cleats attached at the side and bottom of the screen secure the screen when it is extended or retracted.

Here are a few extras to complete your serene space:

  • Enjoy a warm summer night in an even warmer hot tub. When you’re not using the hot tub, you can cover it with one of our custom covers.
  • Open space next to the hot tub where you can roll out your yoga mat for a peaceful workout.
  • Add some woodsy scented candles to bring in a relaxing vibe and complement sweet floral smells.

Let’s Get Physical

If you enjoy getting out and being active on vacation, you’ll enjoy the third stop on your staycation. This idea will bring the little kid out in you and hopefully get your heart pumping. Before we get to the activities part, let’s look at the SugarHouse product we are recommending to make this stop more delightful.

July and August can be the hottest months of the summer. We suggest adding our Rayblock Shade Sail over your outdoor activity area. One of the benefits of shade sails is that they are free-standing and can be temporary. So if you have a playground that you want to move, move the shade sail with it.

Some activities that you can do under your shade sail are:

  • Swimming, if you have a pool.
  • Swinging on the monkey bars of your playground.
  • Cornhole and other lawn games.
  • Play baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc.

Isn’t it Romantic?

Your fourth and final destination will possibly get your heart pumping too. That is if you’re with the right person. It may not be the same as walking on a Hawaiian beach but you can transform your backyard into a romantic place.

To start, have one of our Shade Glide Slide Wire Cable Canopies installed. It can be over an existing structure or we can create an aluminum structure for you. These canopies are retractable so you can fully extend the canopy when the sun is out, then retract when you want to gaze at the stars. These canopies can also look very romantic especially if you pair them with twinkle lights and soft curtains on each corner of the structure.

Don’t forget to include a nice seating area underneath your canopy to enjoy your night. Maybe a comfy sofa or a porch swing hanging from the top of the structure. Or you might prefer to have something that can be easily moved so you can dance the night away to your favorite romantic songs. Adding a sound system with a romantic playlist will also hit the right note.

We want to help make your summer memorable for all the right reasons. Give us a call at 801-563-9600 for a consultation. We’ll discuss how to make your backyard your staycation oasis.

Outdoor Man Cave for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is drawing near and so is the first day of summer. In fact, the first day of summer is the same weekend. So, what about giving the man in your life a place where he can appreciate warm summer days and nights? Give him an outdoor man cave.

Below you’ll find three different ideas of outdoor man caves featuring some of SugarHouse’s products.

For the Game Enthusiast

Take inside games outside for a fun way to enjoy the warm weather. Create a space for the man of the house with a few games to play with his buddies. Do this by taking any game equipment you have in the house out to the patio. For instance, if you have a pool, air hockey or ping pong table, take it out to the patio. Smaller items can also be used like cornhole, darts, or a table and chairs to set-up a game of chess. You can protect these items from inclement weather by installing a pipe frame canopy.

Our pipe frame patio canopies provide protection from both sun and rain, making your deck or patio the perfect place to enjoy your yard during any season. Made with high-quality, galvanized steel pipe and attached to your home with our special brackets, these canopies provide the ultimate protection.

More about pipe frame canopies:

  • We use name-brand fabrics like Sunbrella® and Dickson® that carry a 10-year limited warranty.
  • The fabrics also come in a variety of colors and in striped or solid patterns.
  • The scalloped valance along the bottom of the canopy is an optional feature available in multiple sizes and colors.
  • The canopy has lace pockets that securely attach the front bar and rafters to the fabric cover. This prevents the fabric from lifting up from the frame in the wind.

For the Chef

Who doesn’t love a summer barbeque with family and friends? Barbeques this summer may look a little different with some restrictions still in place. However, you can still make your small gatherings fun and tasty with the ultimate cook area any chef will love.

Start out strong with a durable cover that can be opened to let sunlight in or closed to provide shade and weather protection. A louvered roof is made of tough extruded tempered aluminum and comes with a maintenance-free powder-coated finish. They can withstand up to 180 mph winds and up to 60 lbs. per square foot of snow loads in the winter. SugarHouse’s tectonic arched louvers can span longer than any other louvered roof product on the market. Bonus, they look really slick.

We all know that when you have a gathering indoors and it includes food, everyone ends up in the kitchen. So, for your outdoor space, you’re definitely going to need the same space. There are several options for you so we’ll just give you a couple as to not overwhelm you. The first is the most luxurious. An outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and a fully stocked bar/soda bar. In order to have a pizza oven, you’ll need plenty of space.

If you don’t have that big of a space or don’t want to go quite that fancy, an L-shaped kitchen island with a built-in barbecue is another option. A small fridge, sink, and prep area can all be on one side. On the other side, a raised countertop with bar stools so friends and family can keep the chef company.

When your cook area isn’t in use, protect it from unpredictable weather with one of our custom canvas covers. We can make a cover to fit any shape outdoor kitchen you end up creating.

Once you get your cook area set, here are a few more ideas to fill out your space:

  • A firepit with chairs around for a fun gathering spot.
  • What man cave is complete without a TV to play video games or watch a game when sports return? You can wheel out a TV on a cart if there isn’t a place to mount it.
  • Add a basketball hoop big or small.

For the Laid Back Dude

We’re all about making your backyard your oasis. Not every man cave has to be lively and loud. Some men want a space to relax and not hear the incessant call of “dad, dad, dad” while quarantining. Here are a few ideas of how to give your laid back dude an oasis of his own right on the patio or deck.

  • Lounge area complete with a sofa and oversized pillows.
  • A hot tub with lots of greenery around to give the illusion of being secluded in the woods.
  • Hanging chairs, a hammock, or anything else where you can sit and sway.

To really get away from it all, it’s great to have the option of shades for some privacy. Our Verticool Drop Shades and Verticool Rope Operated Drop Shades come in handy here. They provide an escape from blinding sun and can be lifted easily to see a beautiful summer sunset. The drop shades come with motors and wireless remote controls for shade on demand. The rope operated shades simply drop when the rope is released and raise by pulling on the rope. Both are fantastic products that give you the privacy you need.

We can’t wait to see what other ideas you have for an outdoor man cave. Give us a call at 801-563-9300 so we can get started on a Father’s Day present that will be used over and over again.

When we think of mothers, we think of someone who teaches, nurtures and makes a house a warm and comfortable place to raise a family. With the Coronavirus (COVID-19) running rampant and people being quarantined at home, having a nice place to live and feel safe is important. Since Mother’s Day is coming up, return the favor and extend the walls of your home into a beautiful space for mom to enjoy her time.

SugarHouse has several products to enhance your outdoor space. We’ve put a few together with other products for some ideas for you.

Gathering Place

Quarantining inside your home can become stale and boring especially when the sun is making more and more appearances. Create a gathering place out back where the special lady in your life can gather the family for some bonding, school work or other activities.

A seating area is the first ingredient for a great gathering place. To really make your seating area pop, let SugarHouse recover or replace any outdated or faded upholstery. We are able to customize cushions to fit your furniture exactly. The upholstery we produce for patio furniture is made from premium outdoor foams and fabrics that will give your furniture a much longer life than if you purchased it from a department or home improvement store.

Now that you have updated furniture, make sure you have some coverage for when the sun gets a little too hot. If you don’t want to place your seating area under an existing shaded area, a nice option is a tension shade sail. This is a free-standing shade solution that can be temporary or permanent.

Here are a few more ideas to complete your gathering place:

  • Colorful pillows for your furniture.
  • A firepit for your family to roast hot dogs and smores during the summer.
  • A sofa swing. These look so comfortable!

Elegant Backyard

A slide-wire canopy system can make a space really elegant. Our custom experts can create a system to be installed on an already existing structure or we can design and manufacture an aluminum frame structure for you. These canopies are long panels that are arranged in overhead swales that will give you a nice shady spot or can be retracted when you want a little more light. With the swales overhead, a couple of things that you can add to the structure that will take the elegant factor over the top are some soft fabric draped down on the corners and tied back like curtains and then some twinkle lights woven around the swales. Since both our acrylic and mesh fabrics that are used to make the canopies come in a variety of colors, you can either match your curtain fabric to the canopy or find a complementary color.

Another touch that you can add yourself is a water feature. The graceful sound of water will give your space a relaxing vibe. Some water features can be elaborate and built into landscaping but they can also be really simple, easily purchased and installed on your own.

A Quaint Little Spot

Not all homes come with a large outdoor space, however, you can still make a beautiful spot to spend time with family or get some peace and quiet for yourself.

A retractable awning is a simple way to extend shade over any size area. They can even be mounted on a roof if you are creating your quaint little spot on an upper-level deck. A SugarHouse custom expert will help you create an awning that fits your style and either adds a pop of color to your home or looks like it was part of the original build.

Let’s finish off your quaint little spot with some of these suggestions:

  • A hammock for a reading nook.
  • A breakfast patio spot. If it’s in a place that can only fit a table and a chair, this would be an ideal place for mom to have a few minutes to herself in the morning – after you’ve made her breakfast!
  • Add an outdoor rug and some floor pillows to cozy it up and add extra seating.
  • Potted plants can bring in color. If you don’t have room to bring in big pots or flower boxes, try a vertical garden planter.
  • A small outdoor kitchen or bar with an eating space.

We are ready to get to work on your outdoor space when you are. Give us a call now at 801-563-9600 to talk about how we can make Mother’s Day 2020 special. You can be assured that we are handling business safely as we are currently doing our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19. You can read our official statement here

Company partners with struggling local businesses and at-home sewers to meet overwhelming demand.

Since repurposing its manufacturing facility from awning and boat top production to make personal protective equipment two weeks ago, SugarHouse Industries has seen an overwhelming demand for the face shields and face masks it makes.

“In total, we’ve had requests for nearly 100,000 units,” Mike Peterson, President of SugarHouse Industries remarks. “Our focus has been to meet the needs of our Utah community. We have provided face masks and face shields to medical professionals, senior centers, school districts’ nutritional services, first responders, and essential businesses such as grocery stores, and plumbers just to name a few.”

Due to the overwhelming response, SugarHouse has not only been able to keep its doors open but also to reach out to three other local sewing businesses that had to furlough employees due current economic conditions.

SugarHouse employees and family members donated 150 volunteer hours on Saturday, April 4, 2020 to produce 1,500 face masks and face shields.

“We’ve even developed DIY sewing kits for people to make at home and bring back to us. We are paying $2 for each mask sewn. An experienced sewer can easily make 6-8 masks each hour,” Mike says. “It’s been great to be able to make a positive impact not only on the fight against coronavirus but also its economic effects.”

Media Availability: SugarHouse is holding a second Employee & Family Volunteer Event on Saturday, April 11, 2020, 7 am – 12 noon. Mike Peterson will be there to answer questions.

Activities to Overcome Cabin Fever

Raise your hand if you are going crazy being quarantined. Fear not! We’ve got some suggestions to help avoid cabin fever and get ready for the warm weather coming our way. Bonus, they can all be done while social distancing yourself six to ten feet from others.

Give Your Outdoor Space a Good Cleaning

This is a perfect time to prepare your yard for spring. We suggest you do a thorough cleaning first. Here are a few places to pay attention:

  • Rake up leaves or twigs that are leftover from before winter and start weeding those flower beds. Pruning trees is also a good idea right now.
  • Power wash your deck and/or patio. Mud, salt, and other debris from winter could be ground in and stuck in corners pretty good at this point so this is a great way to get rid of the gunk. If you don’t have a power washer, using a high powered nozzle on your hose is the next best thing or you can even rent or borrow a power washer.
  • Scrub off the outdoor furniture and upholstery. You may be able to use the power washer here too but be careful, some furniture and upholstery could damage with the sheer volume of water coming out. Better Homes & Gardens put together a fantastic article on how to properly clean outdoor furniture. Then once your upholstery is clean and you decide they need to be updated, check out SugarHouse’s upholstery services. Our experts will have you in tip-top shape in no time for you and your guests to social distance yourselves 🙂
  • This next cleaning project may be the most important of all – the grill! One of the most satisfying and salivating smells of summer is something grilling. Make sure you get any charred food off with a wire brush or soak the grates in warm soapy water before cleaning with some steel wool.
  • Don’t forget about your awning! SugarHouse provides cleaning services for your residential awnings so your outdoor space will really shine.

Add Some Character

Now that you’ve got everything tidied up, let’s get into a few other projects to add a little essence to your outdoor space.

How’s your deck looking? Staining a deck can be done in about a day from the prep work to drying. This is at the top of the list for my house. After purchasing our home two years ago, we could definitely use some rich color on our back deck rather than the dim shade of the untouched wood from when it was built.

When you’re done with your deck, you can start planting a few things in your garden. You can start planting cold-weather tolerant vegetables like onions, potatoes, and peas mid-March and broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage aren’t too far behind at the beginning of April. You can start tomatoes and peppers indoors and transfer them outside mid-May when there is no longer frost in the forecast.

You can also start on flower beds to add a pop of color to your outside oasis. The best time to plant flowers is right around the last spring frost so we’re getting really close. Use your time now to get your flower beds ready and plan out what flowers you want to use so you’ll be ready to rock and roll when the time is right.

Time to Play

How does the saying go? “All work and no play…” Well, let’s play then! It has been recommended that we keep up physical activity if we are able to during the quarantine. Here are a few ideas of some activities that you can do to feel sociable but also be a safe distance from others.

  • Ride a bike, take a walk or a run. It’s time to dust of the bike seat and go for a ride around the neighborhood or take a slow or fast stroll. If you are out and about, just make sure to keep your distance from others and look for the least crowded paths available.
  • Sidewalk chalk isn’t just for kids. Have a contest with your family, friends, and neighborhood to see who can draw the most interesting sidewalk art.
  • Kick around a soccer ball. Practicing your moves so you can “Bend it Like Beckham” or just a little game of passing the ball to pass the time is a fun way to get in your physical activity for the day.
  • Throw around a frisbee, baseball, or anything else that can be caught. Just remember to clean those items off before and after use for the next little while.

All of us here at SugarHouse Industries hope these ideas help you get a little more creative with your social distancing and quarantining situations but most of all, we hope you are safe and well. A final suggestion we have to extend your safe-space is to let us create a beautiful awning for the outside of your home. We have so many options available and we would love to help in any way that we can. You don’t have to wait to get started on the custom process as we are doing all that we can to slow the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). You can read our official statement here. Stay safe and stay healthy!

Spring has seemingly sprung early and we’re not mad about it at all. With the weather turning warm and the sun making more appearances, it’s time to start prepping your outdoor space to enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of nature. Adding some shade can enhance the look of your space as well as make it more pleasant for you and your guests. And you can do this all while staying up to date on how it looks. We install hundreds of shades each year so let us show you what’s most popular for 2020.

Slide-wire cable canopy

Slide-wire canopies are a great option for managing the amount of sunlight or shade in your patio area. We can install the canopy system to a pergola or another existing structure. We also provide custom-designed aluminum frame structures for the system that are powder coated in black, white, bronze or a custom color of your choosing.

The slide-wire canopies are long panels that are arranged in overhead swales. They can look, dare I say, romantic and classy? We make them in both woven acrylic fabric and vinyl-coated polyester mesh. Both offer numerous color options and with the acrylic fabric, you can even add a striped pattern. Here’s where you can really start to have fun and add a little 2020 spin.

The Pantone color of the year for 2020 is classic blue. According to the VP of the Pantone Institute, “It’s a reassuring blue, full of calm and confidence. It builds connection.” It seems like a color that would pop with the green foliage and other colors found against nature’s backdrop while bringing a connection to you and your guests.

Exterior Drop Shades

Picture this – you have a gathering of your closest friends or maybe it’s just you and your significant other. You’re on your beautiful balcony enjoying some catch-up time with your loved ones with your favorite foods. All of a sudden, the sunshine that you were so thoroughly enjoying gets in your eyes and you are now seeing halos around everyone. Here’s where an exterior drop shade can help you out. With a push of a button or a crank of a handle, you’ll have a little more shade and your 20/20 or 2020 vision restored without completely blocking the view.

Exterior drop shades are a stylish way to gain privacy and limit the amount of light and heat that enters your outdoor living space making it an inviting place where your family and friends will want to spend time. There are extensive fabric options and a selection of product features that we offer including technology trendy enough for 2020. Did you know that you can integrate your drop shade with your home automation system? What about a wind sensor that automatically retracts your awning when strong winds are detected?

One of the many reasons you should let SugarHouse customize your exterior drop shade is we are able to offer customizable lengths up to 30 ft. and 16 ft. drops. Other companies are not able to offer that.

Retractable Awnings

Outdoor kitchens have become increasingly popular in the last few years and covering them with a retractable awning is a very smart and stylish way to bring comfort to the chef when the sun is beating down on them.

There are so many features for retractable awnings. You can even get one that is installed with an optional electric motor that uses a handheld remote control or wall switch. You can also schedule and operate your awning from your phone. But the features don’t stop there. Check out a few others below:

  • Available in well-known fabrics like Sunbrella and Dickson in plenty of striped and solid colors.
  • 10-year limited warranty against becoming unserviceable.
  • Valance at the bottom available in multiple shapes and sizes.
  • Available sun and wind sensors for easy automation.
  • Manual hand crank can be removed and stored, to be used only when needed.

These are just three shade options to take your outdoor space up a notch but we have plenty more. All of our awnings are made out of name-brand fabrics that have fantastic warranties of up to 10 years. Our experts at SugarHouse Industries are so excited to help you customize an awning that will keep you in style for more than just the year 2020. Oh, the weather outside is frightful but your new awning will be delightful, and when the snow melts away, you’ll enjoy your awning right away.

You’ve probably never thought about having an awning installed during the winter, have you? Well, if you’ve been wanting an awning but haven’t found the right time to install it, here are a few reasons why winter is a great time.

Your awning will be completed faster

Our schedules fill up fast in the spring and summer which means your awning can take a little longer to be completed. With not as many people on the schedule in the winter, your awning will be better positioned to be finished in a shorter amount of time from concept to completion.

More time for consultation

In addition to our installation schedules being more flexible, our awning experts are more available to consult with you. You won’t be rushed on making decisions but rather have time to consider the best awning option(s) for your needs. You can start your research on the different types of awnings we offer by reading one of our previous blog posts about fixed vs. retractable awnings.

Enjoy your yard sooner

We all know the weather can be unpredictable so having your awning done now, you can enjoy it as soon as the weather gets warm.

Drop shades

Another item to work with our experts on is a drop shade. These are used in the winter to keep the weather out, sun/UV protection, and privacy for things like your outdoor winter hot tub sessions.

We offer a variety of shade solutions. Exterior drop shades are available with electric motors and wireless remotes. A rope operated drop shade provide protection for your enclosed deck or patio.

The main material used on our drop shades is Textiline. This fabric is exceptionally durable and highly customizable including numerous color options. We offer customizable lengths up to 30 ft. and 16 ft. drops. Other companies are not able to offer that. We recommend using a 90%-95% mesh for optimal shade. Other reasons we recommend the Textiline material is it carries a 10 year limited warranty, it blocks the sun but not the view and are infused with Micronban® technology, an antimicrobial that inhibits the growth of stains and odor-causing bacteria.

We are ready to work with you and install your awning and drop shade this winter! Give us a call at 801-563-9600 to speak with one of our awning experts.
