Our 80th Anniversary Celebration continues with a chat with our current president, Mike Peterson, and SH’s former president, Walt Peterson.

We asked Walt what he thought his dad, and SH founder, would think of celebrating 80 years in business. This is what he shared with us:

In 1991, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Sugar House Awning and Canvas Products.  My father, Walter Peterson Sr. was then 87 years old and I remember talking with him about what an amazing thing it was to see his little startup business reach that milestone.  He worked many long, hard days to keep the business afloat in the early years, and was justifiably proud to see the fruits of his efforts.

To celebrate those 50 years, we ran a large newspaper ad and invited customers and friends to come to celebrate with us.  We were then located in Sugar House, at 2005 South 1100 East, in a 10,000 square foot building.

Fast forward another 30 years and here we are celebrating our 80th anniversary.  The company has re-branded itself as SugarHouse Industries, reflecting the very diverse nature of our goods and services.  I’ve never doubted the business would continue to carry on and even thrive.  The leadership at SugarHouse is very much focused on caring for the employees (SugarHouse family) as well as providing world-class products and service to its customers.  I just couldn’t be any prouder of the company today.

Watch the interview below to hear Walt’s first memory of working at SugarHouse, what it has been like to pass the business on to his son, and other memories of the last 80 years.

SugarHouse Ind. has served its clients in the Intermountain West since 1941. In that time, we have become Utah’s largest provider of awning, boat tops, and specialty canvas covers. After nearly 80 years, our focus is still to provide customers with the highest quality products and the best prices. We remain a family-owned company, and we remain committed to putting a personal touch into everything we do. That’s why we make every product that we offer in our 30,000 ft2 facility in Midvale, Utah.

Winter is a great time to install Verticool drop shades. Not only will they be ready in time for you to beat the summer heat, but you can also start enjoying your outdoor space now! The shades can block wind and other winter elements so you can get some fresh air when the house is too stuffy. SugarHouse offers two different types of drop shades: Verticool Exterior Drop Shades and Verticool Rope-Operated Drop Shades. Let’s take a closer look at each one of them.

Exterior Drop Shades

Privacy Screen 12Our exterior drop shades are available with either an electric motor or a manual that uses a crank that can be removed and stored. Guides on each side of the shade allow it to roll up and down properly and add stability. The guides can either be metal tracks or thin cables.

Here are some top features:

  • Wind sensor
  • Sun sensor
  • Home Automation Integration
  • 10-year limited warranty
  • Available in reliable and well-known fabrics such as Awntex and Textilene
  • Are infused with Microban® technology, an antimicrobial that inhibits the growth of stains and odor-causing bacteria
  • Offer excellent shading advantages without trapping heat or airflow
  • Our vinyl-coated, polyester-fiber mesh fabric stops 85%-95% of UV rays
  • A solution-dyed acrylic material, such as Sunbrella®, is also available. Because it blocks nearly 100% of the sun and visibility, this material is ideal for both shade and privacy.

Rope-Operated Drop Shades

Privacy Screen 17Rope-operated shades simply drop when the rope is released and raise by pulling on the rope. Cleats attached at the side and bottom of the screen secure the screen when it is extended or retracted. If you wish to install these drop shades yourself, they can be ordered as will-call/shipped items in standard or custom sizes.

  • Available in reliable and well-known fabrics such as Awntex and Textilene
  • Mesh-like, open-weave, vinyl-coated, polyester fiber material
  • Protected by 5-year limited warranty
  • Plenty of color options
  • Provides 70-97% sun protection while still see-through
  • Also available in Sunbrella fabrics, providing 100% protection but not see-through
  • Made to order in standard or custom sizes
  • Standard sizes – 48”-168” (4ft.-14ft.)
  • Available for DIY installation

All of our drop shades are customized and we would love to get to work for you. Give us a call at 801-563-9600 to have an expert craftsman work on your shade solution.

Winterize Your RV with a Trailer Skirt

January 19, 2020

Do you have an RV but aren’t quite sure how to winterize it? SugarHouse can help you with our custom RV trailer skirting. Do you have an RV but aren’t quite sure how to winterize it? SugarHouse can help you with our custom RV trailer skirting. This is an easy and cost-effective way to reduce heat loss, lower your heating bill and stay more comfortable in your trailer during those cold winter months.

How does RV skirting work?

By using a heavy-duty 18 oz reinforced vinyl, an RV skirt covers the gap between the RV and the ground. Our expert craftsmen with measure, pattern, and install. Since trailers are mobile, it’s also important to have skirting that is flexible but able to withstand the different weather elements.

Benefits of RV skirting

There are many reasons why RV skirting is a great idea. First of all, you can reduce your interior heat loss as much as 25% during the winter. What a huge save! Next, trailer skirts can help protect against hot summer heat so it’s a year-round benefit. Since they are installed on the outside, skirts also protect your tires against UV damage and help keep the undercarriage free of dirt.

You shouldn’t drive with RV skirting attached so another great benefit of having SugarHouse create a custom skirt for you is that it’s patterned exactly to your trailer which makes removal and reinstallation quick and painless!

And my favorite benefit of all, you can store items under the skirt! Some campgrounds require skirting for long-term camping. So you can comply with the rules and hide all your camping clutter!

How are the skirts anchored?

SugarHouse uses three different types of top-of-the-line fasteners to provide a durable solution to anchor your skirt. Turn fasteners are sturdy and strong and are recommended for corners. Snap fasteners are easy to use and don’t stick out very far from the RV. And Velcro is perfect for slide outs and any other area where you can’t attach a fastener.

Custom skirts, mass produced, and DIY

We know you have the option of ordering a mass-produced skirt online or even fashioning a solution by yourself but I will tell you why you should let SugarHouse Industries customize your RV skirt.

DIY skirting is cheap and can end up looking like it. You have to take time to measure and cut it and use materials like plywood and styrofoam board. Then there is the issue of figuring out the best way to anchor your skirt. The longevity of your DIY solution is also not really known.

With mass-produced skirts, you can get pretty good quality materials delivered right to your door. However, you also have to do all the work again. Or find the time to take it to someone who has done it before. Plus, there’s all the legwork of having to find the correct fit for your trailer.

But don’t worry, here’s where things get good. By having a custom RV skirt done, our craftsmen will come onsite to you to take measurements to ensure your skirt will fit perfectly so there are no gaps! They will take the time to pattern around steps, exhaust pipes, and other obstructions to maintain a tight, efficient seal. They can even create flaps and openings with Velcro or zippers so that you can access important areas easily. We can also match the color of your trailer so that it looks like it’s a continuation of your trailer rather than an addition.

One of the best parts about having SugarHouse create a custom skirt for you is the vinyl we use to produce the skirts. We use an 18.5” PVC coated polyester material that has a -40 degree cold crack. It’s abrasion-resistant and will not delaminate in the wind.

To get an RV skirt that will last years and is truly custom for your trailer, contact us right away. We can’t wait to get rolling on your skirt!
